When the crests of the Massif Central were the French kingdom's route to the Mediterranean Sea , Saint Gilles was the boarding point for the holy land. During this period, the Camin Romieu (Rome route) and the Camin Régourdan (Régordane way) carried the quests of thousands of men as part of one of Christianity's largest pilgrimages. Now, taking the Régordane way means rediscovering these routes to spirituality but also crossing lands populated by legends: those of William of Orange and the Charroi de Nîmes, the Mandrin brigands, the beast of Gévaudan, Monsieur Seguin's goat or Peter and the wolf.
The Régordane invites travellers to meet the land, the people and their histories. Freedom route, tolerance route, they commit us to listening carefully to the land.
The monuments, humble or prestigious heritage, the landscapes fashioned by man, the stories provide sense to our age. It's up to us to question the multiple signs of this thousand year old dialogue along the pathway in order to understand the identities, to discover the differences.
The itinerary from the Puy en Velay Cathedral to the Tour de Constance concentrates on the edges of antique and medieval civilisations, Cevennes culture, Saracen influences, resistance, crusades...
The Régordane way has now been reborn thanks to an association that has been working to restore this major Cevennes itinerary and which has been rewarded by its being classified as a Grande Randonnée (G.R) pathway that will be inaugurated in Spring 2007.
