HISTORICAL HERITAGE :
The Quai: wrongly called that because no boat has ever come to dock there. It is in fact a dyke built in 1774 to avoid "les Gardonnades" (sudden and violent floods of the river Gardon).
The Clock Tower: it dates from the 14th century and was originally used as a watchtower. Thanks to its clock, it was spared during the destruction of the ramparts in 1629. It also has a sundial with the signs of the zodiac, but the time can only be read between 11 am and 1 pm.
NATURAL HERITAGE:
The cliffs of Peyremale, with its numerous cracks and cavities, are the ideal habitat for bats. The species present on this site are: Schreibers's miniopter; Cestoni's molossus; the eared bat. The bats are active from March to October, period of activity of the insects on which they feed. In winter, they hibernate. It is essential to preserve their quiet zones because any awakening could be fatal to them. All bats in France are protected. They are an essential link in the biodiversity. They consume in one night nearly half of their weight in various insects and pests including mosquitoes!
