HISTORICAL HERITAGE
The bridge of the Camisards 18th century
Classified as a historical monument, the bridge of the Camisards has only its name and its history is linked to that of the communal road system. In the 1680's, the crossing of the Gardon was done by fording or with the help of a plank. The bridge was built between 1714 and 1718. It was destroyed two years after its construction by a strong flood of the Gardon, and was not repaired until 1782. Before the construction of the Abarines bridge, it was the only way to get to Saint-Jean-du-Gard.
The temple of Mialet 16th century, place du temple
Rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of the first temple built in 1562, its particularity is its octagonal shape, in conformity with that of all the first buildings of Protestant worship. It allows the audience to be arranged in a circle around the pulpit and the communion table.
The church of Saint-André, built in the 17th century by an architect from Nîmes, was rebuilt on the site of a first medieval church.
The mill of La Bonté on the banks of the Gardon worked until the Second World War. The force of the water from the small dam on the Gardon River drives the wheel that drives the millstones of different sizes depending on the raw materials they grind: olives, oats and chestnuts. It has been renovated but no longer works.
NATURAL HERITAGE
The banks of the Gardon
The Gardon is the undisputed kingdom of the otter and the beaver, as attested by the many signs that can be observed there: Traces of gnawing, footprints, dams, lodges for the beavers, for example... Otters are much more discreet and difficult to observe... you can observe their footprints composed of 5 fingers placed in fans with small claws whose mark is directly adjacent to the finger.
The beaver and the otter are protected species at the national and European level. They are linked to aquatic environments with high heritage value.
Not to be missed:
The Musée du Désert brings to life the Huguenot past and the History of the Camisards through authentic documents and pieces (furniture, bibles, weapons). It is located in the house where the Camisard leader Rolland was born, in the heart of a Cévenol hamlet and its typical alleys. (paying visit)
The caves of Trabuc : living caves, where water tirelessly leaves its mark on the stone, streaming from draperies to waterfalls, up to the foot of the Midnight Lake, in a staging of shadows and lights (paying visit).
