Need information and advice? The tourist information point of St Jean du Gard answers your expectations to organize your stay in the Cevennes. The advisers in stay, propose you a reception of quality, personalized and warm.
Our team is happy to welcome you in our pleasant village. Saint Jean du Gard, called the pearl of the Cevennes, has a strong Cevenol character. The small capital of the Camisard country, organized along a main street, stretches along the Gardon river. The old center and its alleys, built at the foot of the clock tower, give the village a very particular charm. The secular bell tower is the only vestige of the 12th century Benedictine priory, destroyed during the religious wars. From now on, it marks the hours and gives rhythm to the life of the village community.
The city map is at your disposal to stroll through the village and discover its little secrets.

Rich in its industrial past, Saint Jean du Gard has preserved its architecture and décor, symbols of the silk industry in the Cevennes. The spinning mill known as the Maison Rouge, built in 1848, today the Museum of the Cévennes Valleys, is the guardian of this exceptional heritage. In its workshops, the spinners pulled the silk from the cocoons in order to manufacture kilometers of silk thread. Maison Rouge is also representative of ancient know-how. The museum houses a collection of 10,000 objects that bear witness to the rural life of the population from the 17th century to the present day.

The village is also the starting point for hikes, of all levels, with its more than 150 km of marked trails. The amateurs of pedestrian excursions find themselves each year more numerous, on the steps of their glorious elder, Robert Louis Stevenson, who finished here in 1878 the 220 kilometers of his famous "Voyage en Cévennes avec un âne".
